A firm’s structural position within corporate networks may affect the extent to which it engages in adoptions of multiple logics. This paper asks the question: To what extent does the inter-organizational network structure matter to organizations’ adoption of different logics and thus influence organizational performance? Institutional logic supports symbolic role of new practice adoption for seeking legitimacy and survival, market logic supports substantive role of new practice adoption for seeking efficiency. We argue that firms operating within central corporate network positions opt to adopt market logic strongly regardless of the level of institutional environments. On the other hand, firms operating in structural hole positions tend to adopt institutional logic more strongly during earlier transitions, and to adopt market logic more strongly during later transitions where institutional environments turn better. We test our hypotheses in the context of China’s institutional transitions, where multiple logics are prevalent, and firm performance were found to largely rely on network forms.
